2012 FAIC Latin American and Caribbean Scholarships to attend the AIC Annual Meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico (USA)

The 40th Annual Meeting of American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Work (AIC) will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center and the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico (USA) May 8-11, 2012. The theme of the meeting will focus on outreach and advocacy in conservation. Sessions at the meeting will explore how conservation connects with other departments within institutions, allied professionals, the media, our clients, and the public in general.

The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (FAIC) has received funding from the Getty Foundation to offer scholarships to conservation professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean to participate in the 2012 AIC Annual Meeting. Conservation professionals with a minimum of three years of experience and currently employed in the conservation field may apply. Priority will be given to new applicants; previous scholarship recipients may apply again. The selection will be based on:

  • The quality of a proposed presentation (a 20 to 30 minute talk or a poster)
  • Previous opportunities to attend international meetings
  • Number of applicants from each country
  • Ability to communicate in English (there will be no simultaneous interpretation provided)
  • Ability to share information gained from the AIC Annual Meeting
  • Availability of financial support from employer or other sources

Please read the following information carefully and send an application in English to the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. If possible, please use the application form: as a PDF form or as a Word form. If you cannot use the form, please provide the following information:

  • Personal information: full name, address, e-mail, fax, and phone numbers.
  • Curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages, please do not attach photos and/or additional information).
  • An abstract for a presentation, preferably connected to the topic of the conference (maximum 500 words). The essay needs to written both in English and the original language of the candidate so that it can be reviewed by the selection committee. Abstracts from selected applicants will be considered for presentation in Specialty Group or General Sessions and for the Poster Session.
  • Information on the institution where the applicant is employed: name, address, phone numbers, fax, e-mail, the applicant’s position in the institution, conservation tasks carried out on collections, and how the applicant plans to share and disseminate the information gained from attending the conference and the symposium.
  • A letter with the following information:
    1. A statement committing to attend all sessions and events in the conference and the workshops.
    2. A statement about the type of visa the applicant has to enter the USA. If the applicant does not have a visa, she/he will have four months to obtain it, from the date the scholarship is awarded (November 15, 2011). FAIC will send an original letter of award to be presented at the respective American Embassy. The costs associated with the visa will be the responsibility of the applicant.
    3. An estimated cost of the round-trip economy airfare from your home city to Albuquerque, New Mexico (for arrival Monday, May 7, departure Sunday, May 13, 2012).
    4. A statement on how much could the applicant personally contribute to her/his expenses or from other sources of funding such as her/his institution or local foundations. The expenses including transportation, registration, hotel and miscellaneous are approximately (in U.S. dollars):

Meeting Registration, $395.00
Workshop on May 8, $140.00
Santa Fe/Conservation Lab Tour on May 12, included
Hotel (double occupancy with another scholar), $480.00
Food and miscellaneous (US $56/day x 7 days), $392.00
Airfare from the applicant’s city to Albuquerque, varies
Ground transportation, visa, other travel fees, varies

Scholarship awards from FAIC will generally cover registration, workshop, tour, hotel, and airfare only. A limited number of stipends for meals are available and must be specifically requested.

All applicants of this LAC scholar program will have the opportunity to attend workshops or tours on Tuesday, May 8. A special tour of Santa Fe museums and conservation labs, with language assistance in Portuguese and Spanish, will be organized on Saturday, May 12.
