Realizar un balance desde la perspectiva del educando sobre la preparación de profesionales en el área de arqueología, resulta difícil y escaso en fuentes. Los intentos de conformar escuelas, maestrías y otros resultan múltiples, apareciendo con fugacidad y esfumándose con más prontitud que el anhelo de su organización, lo que dejan a su paso es un escenario lleno de pseudo- profesionales, y uno que otro arqueólogo.
Este contexto lamentablemente ha contribuido a dos fenómenos, la proliferación de conocimientos empíricos y hasta “alternativos” sobre el pasado precolombino y también al crecimiento de la extracción ilícita que constituye la anulación total nuestra historia.
Es así que esta sección tiene como propósito presentar las alternativas que se encuentran actualmente en el Ecuador para estudiar arqueología distinguiendo diferentes categorías, además se presta la posibilidad de reflexionar sobre cada una de estas, abriendo una puerta de discusión entre los profesionales vinculados o no a las instituciones educativas superiores y los estudiantes.

Your readers may like to know that the University of St Andrews, Scotland (UK), will shortly be making an appointment in the Department of Social Anthropology, School of Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies, to be taken up in September 2012. The Director of Pre-Columbian Studies oversees the Pre-Columbian program and its budget, with the help of a program assistant; encourages and advises the Fellows (who are resident for an academic year, term, or summer and pursue their own research); assists in editing the publications of the program; organizes symposia, occasional colloquia and workshops, and public lectures; contributes to the oversight of project grants; and promotes the relevant disciplines. Major responsibilities of the Director include overseeing the process for selecting fellows and junior fellows (for both the academic year and the summer) and fostering a productive, stimulating and collegial atmosphere during the fellowship year. The Director will also engage in internal administrative activities within Dumbarton Oaks.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in one of the disciplines within Pre-Columbian Studies, with a notable record of publication; strong administrative and interpersonal skills; and a general understanding of museum, library, and fellowship practices. Significant post-doctoral professional experience required, preferably in an academic setting. Previous or on-going editorial experience is desirable. Candidates should also have a broad acquaintance with various aspects of the field of Pre-Columbian Studies outside their own specialization, and should be able to join in the general intellectual life of Dumbarton Oaks. Successful candidates have tended to be mid- or later career. Whatever their career stage, they will have a track record in setting and meeting goals independently.
The position is a five-year appointment, renewable for a second term, and will become available in July 2012.
Compensation Grade 60, salary based on experience. Excellent benefits including medical, dental, time away, and retirement plans. Collegial environment in beautiful Georgetown location with free parking or commuting subsidy provided.

Le programme « Bourses de thèse IRD » est un des programmes d’appui au renforcement et à la consolidation des potentiels de recherche dans les pays du Sud, mis en œuvre par l’IRD dans sa double fonction d’opérateur de recherche et d’agence.
Il s'adresse à des étudiants originaires d’un pays du Sud, titulaires d'un master (ou ayant obtenu une équivalence), qui s'engagent dans la préparation d'un doctorat dans le cadre d’un partenariat existant entre une unité de recherche à cotutelle IRD et des partenaires du Sud, ou d’un projet validé dans le cadre de l’appel à propositions CPU-IRD.
Ces bourses débuteront à partir du 1er octobre 2012.

Dawn Lohnas, current student in the UCLA/Getty program for the conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Materials is seeking an archaeological excavation that could benefit from conservation assistance, for two weeks, anytime between March and August, 2012. Would ideally like to be on a site with a supervising conservator. Please contact Dawn with any projects that could benefit from further conservation assistance for several weeks. Dawn has a background in South American archaeology, and worked for several summers as an archaeology student and then as a conservator in the Tarapaca Valley in Chile on the UCLA Field Project (in collaboration with the Universidad de Chile). She also interned as a conservator for a summer at the National Museum of the American Indian, and is currently an intern at the Getty Villa Antiquities Conservation lab. She will have a small budget available to her, which will cover travel and most expenses. Please contact her for further information:
